A modern slot machine is a full-featured embedded computing platform wrapped in a cabinet designed to run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for years. The electronics inside include one or more high-brightness displays, a custom power supply, multiple PCBs, bill validators, ticket printers, card readers, audio amplifiers, and a network interface for communication with the casino floor system.

Each of those subsystems uses components that need to perform reliably in a specific environment: air-conditioned casino floors that still generate heat inside sealed cabinets, constant vibration from player interaction, and electrical noise from hundreds of machines running in close proximity.

Displays need to be bright, responsive, and long-lasting. Power supplies need to convert AC mains to multiple DC rails efficiently and quietly. Switches and buttons handle millions of actuations. Interconnect has to survive repeated service access for maintenance and compliance inspections.

Beyond the Slot Floor

Gaming technology extends well beyond the slot machine itself. Electronic table games use displays, sensors, and custom electronics to track bets and outcomes. Player tracking systems require card readers, embedded processors, and network connectivity at every machine position. Casino surveillance systems consume cameras, video processing hardware, and the power and thermal management components to support them.

Back-of-house systems include server rooms running casino management software, jackpot controllers, and regulatory compliance hardware. These rack-mounted systems use standard IT components: fans, power supplies, connectors, and circuit protection.
